A kitchen in an Island Park cabin has a different job than one in town. It gets loaded up on a Friday, cooked in by a full house, and left to sit cold through long stretches of winter. Cabinets need to take that in stride.

Knotty alder, hickory, and rustic character grades look right against log walls and timber ceilings, and they hide the ordinary wear of cabin traffic better than a flat painted door. We lean into wood that has some life in it, because that is the look people come to the mountains for anyway.

Great rooms drive a lot of these projects. A wall of built-ins around the fireplace, a bench with drawers under the windows, a bar tucked into the corner for when the crowd comes up. The cabin is where the family gathers, so the millwork should hold the gear and the gathering both.

Mudrooms matter more here than almost anywhere. Boots, waders, snow, and dogs all come through the same door. Deep lockers, a durable bench, and hooks that will actually hold a wet coat keep the mess contained at the threshold instead of tracking through the house.
